Process

1.	Entering your Application for Green Card Lottery

The Department of State receives Green Card Applications during the month of October. These Green Card applications are sorted according to geographic regions (Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, North America and Oceania). Each Green Card application is individually numbered and screened. Green Card applications that do not comply with official entry regulations are rejected.

2.	Green Card Application Selection

Within each region the Kentucky Consular Center Computer randomly selects and registers Green Card applications from all the entries received.

The consular center will reject any application that does not comply with the Green Card Lottery guidelines.

The U.S. Department of State selects about 90,000 applications in order to ensure that all 50,000 DV-2009 Green cards will be issued. This means that only the first 50,000 qualified winners will actually receive a Green Card. No country may receive more than 5,500 diversity visas in any given year.

3.	Notification from the U.S. Department of State

The Consular Center will send you a notification letter to the address listed in your application if your are selected as a winner.

Notifications will be mailed to the winners for the DV-2009 Green Card Lottery between the months of May and July 2007. The notification will include instructions on how to apply for the Green Card.

4.	Application Processing

The deadline for issuance of green cards to successful applicants and their family members in the DV-2008 lottery program is September 30, 2008. Under no circumstances can diversity visas be issued or adjustments be approved after this date.
